About 90% of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) live in areas where no rehabilitation services h ave been provided and the biggest challenge is to reach these unreached PWDs. A new scheme DISTRICT DISABILITY REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES launched by the Hon’ble Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India in Jan/Feb. 2000 is a step towards providing rehabilitation services and implementation of PWD Act. 1995. The major objectives of these centres are :
- To provide comprehensive rehabilitation services to PWDs to enable them to become self-sufficient and productive.
- To act as disseminator of information relating to prevention of disabilities and strengthen society in controlling and preventing them.
- To facilitate convergence of schemes and programmes of various departments and mobilise/utilise local resources and expertise for development of PWDs.
- DDRCs will be a collaborative effort of State/District administration, implementing agency (National Institutes/ALMICO/DRC) and local NGOs/autonomous agency and facilitating agency.
Under this scheme Nine District Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DDRCs) in Bihar, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa were successfully established by the institute have been functioning well under the District Management Team(DMT) by the chairmanship of District Collector.
